Interview // Wanshu Li

Wanshu Li is originally from China and currently based in Birmingham, United Kingdom. She is the winner of the 2017 JOYA Barcelona Award and the winner of 2018 the After JOYA Effect Fifth Edition Award at Athens Jewellery Week.

She has been exhibited her work in the UK, Europe and internationally. Her jewellery has been spotted by several internationally-regarded galleries and collectors.




 
What are your life essentials/ what do you carry with you all the time?

The thing I carry with me all the time is old Canon camera. It is my first camera that my father bought it for me ten years ago. I am still using it for taking photography for my jewellery.


Who was your most previous text/call to and what about?

My mum texted me and asked me about how the coronavirus situation is in the UK and Europe.
 

Last meal you would eat?

Homemade soup noodles.
 

Most influential person in your life?

The most influential person in my life is my tutor Dorothy Hogg. She helped me and encouraged me a lot during my study at the Edinburgh College of Art. She is such an inspiring person who always encouraging me to be brave and telling me not to be afraid of taking risks in my life.






Tried and true methods against creative block?

I will talk to my best friends or my parents as sharing things happening in my life with others can always bringing me new inspirations and ideas. As in the《Confucian Analects》what the Master said, “when three are walking together, I am sure to find teachers among them. I will select their good qualities and follow them, their bad qualities and avoid them”.
 
 

What are some inspiration things, designs, artists, music, sites that you find yourself re-visiting often?

"I like to revisit traditional Chinese philosophy, poetry and history. For example , every time I read the《Confucian Analects》, I have a different understandings of the notes. By reading it and learning from it, I feel calm and inspired." 

 
If you could have 3 people for dinner, dead or alive, who would you invite?

My grandparents and my aunt.
 
 




Favorite cities? Why?
My favorite city is Edinburgh. Because I met my best friends, best tutors and my partner there. I think I had my best time living in that city and my life is becoming more meaningful since I met the people I like in Edinburgh.


Favorite drinks?

Homemade strawberry milk shake
 

Likes/dislikes?

Likes: Yoga, Zumba dance, movies, ocean, walking in a forest, climbing mountains, animals, traveling, colours, hot pot, vocations and family dinners etc..
Dislikes: noisy places, the weather in the UK, smoking, plastic surgery, deadlines, politics and discriminations etc..
